Syracuse Surge is an inclusive community plan to ignite economic growth and neighborhood transformation in Syracuse and Central New York. The city of Syracuse and CenterState CEO, with support from SUNY EOC, OCM BOCES, and Onondaga Community College, have aligned with local employers to launch several Syracuse Surge job training programs to prepare a local workforce with tech skills for today's economy.

There are great careers in available in Central New York in advanced manufacturing, coding and software. Read more about the available programs below and how to apply for FREE hands-on training. Once we receive your application, we'll work with you to find the program that's the best fit.

All programs are PAID and TUITION-FREE. Graduates will be connected to job opportunities that offer a steady, predictable schedule, retirement, health care, paid sick time and vacation time.

Surge Advanced Manufacturing (SAM)

Jumpstart your career with a PAID, TUITION FREE professional development program designed to take your life skills and mold them to fit positions in high-tech industries. This program is for anyone. Examples of jobs past program graduates had before starting SAM include nail technician, grocery store clerk, and retail worker. This program is hosted by SUNY Economic Opportunity Center (EOC).

Deadline: Applications are open and due Nov. 1, 2023
Program runs: Nov. 15 to Dec. 15., at SUNY EOC.

Do you enjoy working on electrical or mechanical repairs, such as fixing cars or household appliances? The Electrical Mechanical Technician (ELM) program may be great for you! ELM is designed for people who have some experience working on any machines, electronics or in manufacturing. This PAID, TUITION-FREE four-week program is hosted by OCM BOCES & Onondaga Community College (OCC).

Program runs: Nov. 6 to Dec. 15, 2023, at OCC

Surge Defense

Do you enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together? Surge Defense is a 13-week program hosted by SUNY Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). Graduates of this PAID, TUITION-FREE program will receive an OSHA 10 and JSTD100 National Certification. Upon program entry, candidates will receive a conditional offer with Surge Defense employer partners, such as Lockheed Martin. Finalists will have the opportunity to work on electronic assembly using precision parts and methods to craft some of the most business critical products in the entire world.

Surge Coding Apprenticeship

Are you interested in breaking into a career in tech? The Surge Coding Apprenticeship may be for you! The apprenticeship kicks off with a few weeks of PAID training. You’ll learn project management, technical skills, effective communication and more. Afterward, apprentices will work in entry-level, full-time roles with one of our employer partners. These partners are committed to investing in your development and creating more inclusive workplaces. We strongly encourage woman and people of color to apply.
