Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse's joint Tech Hub application to create the NY SMART I-Corridor received praise from the Editorial Boards of Syracuse.com and The Buffalo News. The pieces rightfully point out the strong case made by this regional consortium for this significant potential federal investment, and why when we work together, rather than compete, our communities stand to benefit.

From Syracuse.com:

“When government invests in research, education and technology in regions of the country that have lagged economically, it sparks innovation, competition and the creation of good-paying jobs. The three cities apart have great assets — humming high-tech industries, expertise in advanced manufacturing, world-class universities, an educated work force and some real momentum for growth. Together, the sum of our three Upstate cities is greater than the parts.”

From The Buffalo News:

"But it’s not just what those cities don’t have that make them competitive in this hunt. Their colleges and universities, their workforces and their existing industries combine to make the region a powerful entrant in the bid to win the tech hub designation and the money – as much as $75 million – that comes along with it...What is more, even if the region falls short in this competition, the exercise of working together has overcome longstanding reluctance for the regions to work together. That will pay economic dividends in the future."

The Tech Hubs program, established as a part of the CHIPS & Science Bill and advocated for by Senator Chuck Schumer, will invest directly in regions with potential to transform into globally-competitive innovation centers in the next decade to bring critical industries back from overseas, such as semiconductor manufacturing, and create good-paying jobs for American workers.
