Syracuse, NY – The Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. and Café Kubal are “brewing” up a celebration to show their appreciation for Downtown Syracuse employees. On Tuesday, October 10exactly one week from today – the two organizations will partner to present an hour-long Downtown Coffee Break. Everyone who works in Downtown Syracuse is invited to step away from the “daily grind,” and treat themselves to free coffee and a snack in Hanover Square.

From 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Café Kubal – which boasts two Downtown Syracuse locations, and is soon to debut a third in the Marriott Syracuse Downtown – will serve 8-ounce cups of coffee and samples of its chocolate chip banana bread to attendees. The event will be held in Hanover Square, closest to the South Warren Street entrance (map), across from the State Tower Building. Employees are encouraged to bring their business cards to enter free drawings for Downtown gifts.

There are now more than 28,000 people who work in Downtown Syracuse. Since the last time the Downtown Coffee Break was held (in 2015), Downtown’s workforce has grown by nearly 1,000 employees. In just the last year:

  • 400 SUNY Upstate Medical University Information Technologies & Finance employees moved into the Galleries (September 2016)
  • Arcadis Engineering moved its headquarters from Dewitt to Downtown Syracuse, bringing 250 new employees to One Lincoln Center (December 2016)
  • BlueRock Energy moved its headquarters – and 65 employees – from Franklin Square to the Barclay Damon Tower (March 2017)

And, in the next week, Downtown Syracuse will welcome 27 new employees as The Digital Hyve moves into its new residence at 100 Clinton Square.

“In choosing Downtown as the place to be their workplace home, everyone who works in Downtown Syracuse contributes to a strong sense of community,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We’re grateful to have our Downtown friend and neighbor, Café Kubal, join us to present this event. The Downtown Coffee Break is our way of saying ‘Thank you,’ to our Downtown employees because we appreciate all they do to add to Downtown’s vibrancy.”

Café Kubal has had a Downtown Syracuse presence since 2011. It opened its first Downtown location in the fall of 2011 in Dey’s Plaza, located at 401 South Salina Street (map). In March 2015, the coffee roaster opened a second Downtown location in Creekwalk Commons, located at 324 West Water Street (map). Each location plays up the historical significance of the building (or neighborhood it occupies) in its décor. Where the Kubal in Dey’s Plaza’s classic chandeliers and industrial gears is a nod to the department store the building housed for decades, the Creekwalk Commons’ location boasts Art Deco characteristics to complement the iconic Niagara Mohawk (now National Grid) building across the street.

“Café Kubal is honored to present the Downtown Coffee Break and serve the Downtown community each and every day,” said Matt Godard, owner of Café Kubal. “Whether it’s choosing to hold a meeting in one of our cafes, or stopping in to experience a brief Oasis from the business of life, we are thankful to Downtown Syracuse employees for making us a part of their routines. It’s fun for us to be able to give back to the community in this way.”

The Downtown Coffee Break date was chosen to coincide with the final Tuesday of the 2017 Downtown Farmers Market Season, which takes place next Tuesday in Clinton Square, across Salina Street from Hanover Square. The Downtown Farmers Market now boasts a harvest of fall staples, including pumpkins and gourds, squash, apples, cider, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels Sprouts, as well as fall plants such as corn stalks and mums. The Market is open from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. The Downtown Committee will serve Apple Cider and Donuts all day at the Information Booth for all farmers and Market visitors, as a token of appreciation for taking part in the 45th Season of the Downtown Farmers Market.
